Innovations to Address Seasonal Poverty

Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies (BIDS) organized BIDS Public Lecture 2022 titled “Innovations to Address Seasonal Poverty" on March 28, 2022 in the BIDS Conference Room. This lecture was delivered by Dr. Ahmed Mushfiq Mobarak, Professor of Economics, Yale University, USA. The lecture was held in Hybrid Format.

In the presentation, Professor Mobarak, highlighted that in Bangladesh and in many countries of the world millions of people are still suffering from seasonal poverty and it is more prevalent from September to November in particularly Lalmonirhat and Kurigram districts in North Bengal. Professor Mobarak mentioned that during this time the poor do not even have enough money to migrate to another district in search of work. To address the seasonal poverty he suggested that facilitating internal migration when the people are out of work and giving financial supports such as migration loan system might help them immensely.

The seminar was attended by BIDS researchers, academics and media. Dr. Binayak Sen, DG, BIDS chaired the Public Lecture.
