BIDS and Bonik Barta Extend Honors to Two Esteemed Economists


In recognition of their unique contributions to research, economics, policymaking, and development thinking, Mashiur Rahman, the immediate past economic affairs adviser to the prime minister, and A. B. M. Md. Azizul Islam, former finance and planning adviser to a caretaker government, were jointly honored by the Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies (BIDS) and the daily Bonik Barta at the event titled ‘Gunijon Shongbordhona 2023’ on November 20th at Pan Pacific Sonargaon Hotel. This marks the sixth occasion where these two esteemed organizations have organized the ‘Gunijon Shongbordhona’ event.

 

At the event, Planning Minister M.A. Mannan and Foreign Minister A. K. Abdul Momen presented the crest to Mashiur Rahman, while A. B. M. Md. Azizul Islam participated virtually, and Professor Mohammad Mujibul Haque, Dean of BRAC Business School, accepted the crest on his behalf.

 

Director-General of BIDS, Binayak Sen, emphasized the scarcity of people well-versed in macroeconomics in the country, placing A. B. M. Md. Azizul Islam in the forefront due to his expertise and policy acumen. He noted Azizul Islam's roles in teaching and various government agencies, highlighting his sharing of experiences with students and others. He also praised Mashiur Rahman for his enduring contributions to economic policymaking.

 

In his speech, Mashiur Rahman expressed gratitude for the honor, acknowledging those whose knowledge and support aided him throughout his journey. He also reflected on his diverse roles within the government, highlighting his privilege to work with then Prime Minister Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman after Bangladesh's independence

 

Mirza Azizul Islam thanked Bonik Barta and BIDS in a video message and stated, "When you receive respect, responsibility increases. Serving the country with my knowledge is my first priority. I will strive to work with dedication for the rest of my life."

 

Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen praised the awardees, recognizing Azizul Islam's impactful contributions to the economy and Mashiur Rahman's commitment to moral principles and avid reading. He highlighted Rahman's unique experience as Bangabandhu's first personal assistant.

 

Planning Minister M A Mannan wished them good health and remarked, “Such initiatives are rare. Therefore, I earnestly hope that this event will persist as a collaborative effort between Bonik Barta and BIDS”.

 

Rehman Sobhan, chairman of the CPD, mentioned his longstanding relationship with A. B. M. Md. Azizul Islam and praised Mashiur Rahman's intellectual prowess.

 

Immediate past State Minister for Planning Shamsul Alam, Former Governor of Bangladesh Bank Salehuddin Ahmed, Professor Rounaq Jahan, Distinguished Fellow at the Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD), Dr. Atiur Rahman, Former Governor of Bangladesh Bank, Matiur Rahman, Editor of the Daily Prothom Alo, along with dignitaries from various sectors such as ministers, economists, corporate executives, and academicians, participated in the event.
