Post Doctoral Fellow

Profile

Umme Busra Fateha Sultana is a post-doctoral fellow at the Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies (BIDS). She is a professor of Women and Gender Studies at the University of Dhaka and served as the Chairperson of the same department from 15 April 2021 to 14 April 2024. She has been teaching gender issues in this department for more than fifteen years. She also taught Gender & Cultural Studies at the University of Sussex, UK. She is a Gender Studies scholar, a passionate researcher, and an academic writer. She was awarded a Commonwealth Scholarship in 2011 to pursue her PhD in Gender Studies from the University of Sussex. Through extensive archival research, she collected family planning campaigns and contraceptive advertising (1971-2011) that appeared in print and audiovisual media in Bangladesh to study them from the perspective of critical discourse analysis. Combining this with intensive fieldwork through qualitative methods she examined representations of gender relations and sexuality in these contents and how such representations are(/aren’t) reflective of women's lived experience of sexuality across different social classes and generations. Her PhD study made her particularly interested in exploring more about the interplay of power politics across identities, norms, and institutions. She has been involved in many research projects and worked as a gender expert with AC Nielsen, the Handicap International Bangladesh, The Hunger Project Netherlands, DASCOH, and the University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh, to name a few. As a national consultant, she developed the 9th Cycle CEDAW report in collaboration with the UN Women and the Ministry of Women and Children Affairs. She has contributed many papers at national and international conferences and also reviewed and authored many articles with national as well as internationally accredited publishers including Project Muse, Oxford University Press, and Brill. She was a member of the Panel Judges (2013-2016) in the Commonwealth Essay Competition Worldwide (Junior Section), the Royal Commonwealth Society (RCS), and also is an Associate Fellow in the Higher Education Academy, UK. Her areas of research interest are Inequalities & Social Exclusion, Sexuality & Contraception, Feminist Historiography, Intersectionality, Critical Development Studies, Gender Violence, Empowerment, Politics of Representation, and Media & Cultural Studies.
