Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies (BIDS) organised a seminar titled "Poverty Dynamics and Banking: A Microeconometric Analysis"
Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies (BIDS) organised a seminar titled “Poverty Dynamics and Banking: A Microeconometric Analysis” on 27 August, 2019 at BIDS Seminar Room. The presentation was made by Dr. Arya Pillai, University College Dublin.
The research aimed to find evidence for the impact of finance on the poverty dynamics of India, using the panel data set from Indian Human Development Survey. Dr. Pillai shows that the impact of various financial services on reducing poverty in India is notable and significant, but this doesn't come from the income generating channel as per the theory predicts. She also shows that, in India, poor households obtain lower number of loans and lesser amounts of loans where poor lag behind non-poor when it comes to access to savings and bank accounts.
The seminar was attended by BIDS researchers. Dr. K.A.S Murshid, DG, BIDS chaired the seminar.
